[music |TV in the background]

I'm new to the area. I moved to Indian Shores about a month ago, and I'm in need of getting some recommendations for the following:

1) an oral surgeon to remove two of my wisdom teeth (I would like to avoid being knocked out if at all possible... I had my other two removed with just my face and mouth being numbed and did just fine)

2) a mechanic that's great with German cars. My mom has a slightly older (2000 I think) Mercedes SL 500, and she had the same (awesome) mechanic for years. As much as I love dealerships, she prefers the small independents that have a strong customer following (and a diagnostic machine).

3) any sort of awesome indie/alternative/unique stores or places to go in general. I have no idea where to go here, and I definitely don't fit in with what I've seen so far (which isn't that much because I'm paranoid of getting lost and ending up in either Orlando or Sarasota). I like hacking up T-shirts, sewing in general, Victoriana/steampunk, belly dancing, and places (and people) where I don't get completely weird looks for having a funky haircut or color, even though it's extremely toned down from where it was a year ago. Places don't have to fit these specifics, so anything you think I might like is completely awesome. I can add to the "random interests" list if necessary. : )

Thanks in advance! XD

4 Days and 4 Projects to Pennsic [Jul. 22nd, 2008|12:16 pm]

Yesterday [info]sfandra pointed out that since some of my projects are now slated for completion at Pennsic, that means I don't actually have as many to get done before Pennsic. (Thus the radical drop in the number of projects mentioned in the subject above.) But even so, it's a good thing I caught up so much over the weekend, as I've now had a highly annoying setback.

* Pennsic Camp Data and Layout - Last night I finished sealing up the layout and getting it ready to hand off to [info]lucanusdux, only to then find out that two people from our group who won't be able to attend Pennsic after all got refunds. This means we'll get less square footage, so the whole layout may have to be redone. Can I just say UGH! Anyway, [info]lucanusdux and I will be getting together tomorrow to see what needs to be done.
* Plans for 20th Pennsic - Last night I got the fabric all cut into pieces for the favors, and 8 of the 20 painted. At that point my arm told me that if I didn't stop painting, it was going to fall off in protest. The plan for tonight is to paint at least another 8, if not all 12 remaining. And maybe even try to get a jump on sewing them together.
* Yooka Vestments - No new progress
* Turquoise Textured Stripe Field Stola - No new progress
* Bubble Gauze Veils - Cancelled - I suppose it's theoretically possible that I might still have time left to get these done. But with the setbacks above, and how low these are on my priority list, I've just decided to cut myself some slack and put these off for next year.

Slated for Completion at Pennsic
* Green Parasol
* Laurel Cloak
* Gauze Turban Veil
* Muslin Turban Veil

Utah Goes to 4-Day Workweek to Save Energy
July 14, 2008
Source: USA Today

In a yearlong experiment aimed at reducing the state's energy costs, Utah is set to become the first state to switch to a four-day workweek for thousands of government employees. Governor Huntsman, who issued the order, says he's making the change to reduce the state's carbon footprint, increase energy efficiency, improve customer service and provide workers more flexibility. The state joins several local governments across the nation that are offering or mandating altered schedules to save money, energy and resources.

Starting August 4, state employees will work 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, and have Fridays off. The new arrangement will affect about 17,000 out of 24,000 executive-branch employees. Public universities, the state court system, prisons, police forces and other critical services will be exempt.

Huntsman believes the change will help Utah reach its goal of reducing energy use 20% by 2015. The governor’s office estimates that turning off the lights, the heat and the air conditioning on Fridays in 1,000 of 3,000 government buildings will save about $3 million a year. The state also expects to save on gasoline used by official vehicles, though it did not offer an estimate. Employees affected by the order will also save more than $300,000 on gas according to estimates by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

Kim Hood, executive director of the Department of Administrative Services touted the environmental benefits: "We feel like we can reduce the CO2 or the ozone by around over 3,000 metric tons, as well as have an impact on our air pollution." It is not known how much of this benefit will be countered by employees using their vehicles for recreation and personal business on their Fridays off, though certainly fewer cars will be stalled in traffic jams headed to and from downtown offices in Salt Lake and other metropolitan areas on those days.

Beyond the energy and financial implications, the four-day work week is also a quality-of-life issue. Huntsman says it is popular among younger employees and that his action will make Utah more competitive in luring talent. At the same time, the governor's office is moving to iron out problems for employees with child-care concerns and those using public transportation that would have difficulty adjusting to a longer workday.

Leslie Scott, executive director of the National Association of State Personnel Directors, says Huntsman's action is a first. "Most states have a four-day work week option for their employees, but Utah is the first to go to a mandatory four-day work week. A good number of the states are encouraging their agencies and managers to offer a four-day work week whenever possible."

The four-day work week is fairly common among city and county governments according to Rex Facer, an assistant professor at Brigham Young University. Facer, who heads a research team studying the four-day work week concept, estimates that about one-sixth of U.S. cities with populations above 25,000 at least provide employees with the option of a four-day work week. With rising energy costs, Facer expects this percentage to increase.

The Knight of Wands card

suggests that proposals or ideas could come out of the blue, and you may need to think fast on your feet or improvise. This could be an opportunity to add spark or zest to your love life or relationship or to follow through on romantic plans. You might feel lost or crazy in love. Things could go too far or too fast, however, especially if one of you is unable to keep up with the changes.

"Good dumpster divers make good neighbors" [Jul. 21st, 2008|11:14 pm]

[mood | bouncy]

Our neighbors- the ones across the street- are throwing away a robot. No, really. It's about 2 1/2' tall, and looks like a cross between Marvin from the H2G2 movie and Peepo from Jason of Star Command.

They're throwing. Away. A robot.

In the spirit of both neighborly relations (and also in the spirit of not-getting-my-ass-kicked-by-[info]femetal), I am not salvaging it.

This is character growth for me. Or at least I'm going to pretend it is. :-)
