Doctor Strange by Del Toro and Gaiman
In news that will matter to, I believe, none of my friends, Guillermo del Toro, who directed Blade II and Hellboy has announced interest in making a Doctor Strange (2010) film.

He is taking it seriously enough that he has already spoken to Neil Gaiman, of Sandman fame, who also scripted Beowulf and Stardust.

Empire: Movie News - Exclusive: Del Toro To Make Dr Strange?

Depending on how you define "Friend", your openeing clause may or may not be true.

*I* Find the news totally cool!

You qualify. ;)

I knew you were a fellow comic fan, just most fans prefer the conventional characters (which I'm fond of too, don't get me wrong).

But Strange has always been my favorite, and considering other successful movies I would consider in the genre -

The Devil Rides Out
The Ninth Gate
The Craft
Lord of Illusions
Warlock
Constantine
The Exorcist
The Omen
Rosemary's Baby
Stigmata
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Blair Witch Project
The Prophecy (1995)
End of Days
Wishmaster
(need I go on?)

it seems a well done version could be both a successful film and a critical success (though I'll settle for just a good movie).

Glad to see others might care!

I do as well.

However, before that comes out, I am very much looking forward to The Watchmen :)

Wow, I didn't even realize this had come out of "development hell" - there are already production stills.

Looks pretty cool!

Dr. Strange has always been one of my favorites (if only because Stan gave him such great dialogue from his inception..."By the Hoary Hosts of Hograth" was just too trippy.)

I have liked what Del Toro did with HellBoy and his Pan's Labyrinth shows he definately can envision other dimensions. This looks like it might be a good fit.

It's nice to find you can still be surprised by people you know - I would never have guessed so many people even knew who Doc Strange was, let alone liked him.

I also liked his approach to HellBoy, but haven't seen Pan's yet, believe it or not. Been missing a lot of movies lately, and still playing catch up.
