But now is the end of days, and I am the reaper. [Oct. 11th, 2006|10:44 am]

Before I begin, let me throw out a quick update:

For those who are unaware, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are having a free (yes, you read that right - free) show at the State Theatre tonight. It is a secret, unannounced (and did we mention, free?) show. Apparently, State will not let anyone line up prior to 5pm, and then it's first come, first served until wristbands are gone.

The reason I'm telling you this is I would love to go, would kill to go, would pay to go see the YYY, but sadly I can't because (dum, dum, dum)

For his birthday, I am taking [info]darkwing2022 to Orlando to see -

So, I can't say I'm devastated about missing YYY, I'm sure I'll get a chance to see them again. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming...

OK, now I know I've seen a good horror movie.

Monday, [info]djpsychobilly and [info]fearangel invited me over. They had just picked up the proverbial "buttload" of movies, and we discussed over dinner what we should watch. I voted for the horror movie: Silent Hill

As a lifelong fan of horror, I'm skeptical of new horror movies - they usually suck. Most writers, directors, and fans for that matter, don't know the difference between "horror" and "terror."

I knew I had seen a real horror movie when I couldn't stop thinking about it the next day. Terror is fleeting, there's a moment of panic and then relief. Horror tends to linger...

Sure, the movie had some poor acting and atrocious dialog in places, but the overall effect was phenomenal.

I was so enamored of the fictional setting created for the film, I had to read more about it. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it's based on a real place - Centralia, PA. Centralia is a town that, as the result of a coal fire that has been burning under it for 44 years is all but abandoned (yes, believe it or not, there are still 12 permanent residents of Centralia).

Amusingly, Silent Hill was not the first film to be inspired by this location. The Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Chevy Chase, and Demi Moore cult film Nothing but Trouble was also loosely based on this place.

OK, so now I HAVE to go to Centralia next time I visit my family, having learned nothing from watching the movie. It's only about a 3 hour drive, so if and when I get there, and you never hear from me again, you'll know what happened...
