Favorite Songs (subject to change without notice)
I got tagged on Monday, so I started working on a list. I would have replied by Tuesday, but I was home sick with the flu.

I have always found it impossible to make a list of favorite songs (or favorite bands, for that matter), as there are so many.

Also, there is the problem of "favorite" versus "best" (yes, those two lists for me would overlap, but they would not be synonymous.

For the sake of just getting through this, my ultimate criteria was songs that have 1) had a major impact on me, 2) endure, and 3) I find myself randomly singing for no other reason then they just popped into my head.

This list is in no way complete, and I'm sure as soon as I post it, I'll think of songs that should have been included and just slipped my mind.

You're not kidding when you say you have a long list. Most of those songs I also love.

I guess my criteria for favorite songs are:
* I never get tired of listening to it
* I never stop liking the song
* I sing along to it any time I hear it
* I randomly start humming it in my head
I either:
     - totally love the lyrics / identify strongly with the lyrics
     or
     - sound/tune/rhythm really strike a cord with me (just know it when the sound of a song really grabs me but I can't describe it)
     or
     - Both of the above

But like you said, this doesn't necessarily mean that they are generally considered "Best" songs but anyone else

I probably have several hundred songs that fit your criteria - my above list was dramatically pared down (left off, on purpose, a lot of bands that I do like - Talking Heads, Devo, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Go Gos, Styx, Kansas, Twisted Sister, etc...). Had to stop at some point.

I'm actually fairly diverse and well-versed in my musical tastes, I've spent a great deal of time actively pursuing more knowledge about popular and alternative music. I look for bands on labels I like, bands that other bands I like like, samplers to check out multiple acts I don't know at once.

So trying to limit that to a few favorites is near impossible.

I know what you mean. I have at least one favorite song for every band I like.
For bands I REALLY like a LOT, most of their songs are favorites, like Iron Maiden for instance - for whom I probably have a few favorite songs per album.

Then there are the old classic songs on the Classic Rock stations that I've known and loved since I was a kid but I don't even own the albums.

I was considering putting together an extended favorites list such as yours which will take awhile.

See you and I are some of those people addicted to music. I can never go very long without music, unless I'm watching t.v.

Of course the criteria of singing along to the song may not be a good one because it is incredibly hard for me to KEEP from singing along unless I'm talking to someone or I'm very busy concentrating on something else. I automatically sing anytime there is music. Except at work, where I often find myself humming and then wonder if the person next to me finds that annoying.

I've always thought of my music as the sountrack of my life, so even though they're a new band I only discovered a few years back (with my friend [info]gracie_kittie13, I thought this summed it up well -

And this is the soundtrack playing in back
of our restless lives
And though they make no sense these are the moments
we'll remember for
the rest of our restless lives
- The Restless by The Matches
